Is AI Transforming Work – or Just Automating Chaos?

“I asked the smartest people I know about the future of AI. They didn’t mention AI at all. They talked about leadership, trust, and critical thinking instead.”
~ Elaine Page, CPO

We’re deep into Copilots, Agentforce, Cortex AI, and fancy orchestration frameworks, but beneath the hype, your agents are only as smart, secure, and cost-effective as the plumbing underneath them.

In my last post Is AI Really Transforming Customer Service? Or Just Handling the Mess? – I called out a simple truth: plugging an agent into customer complaints queues without fixing why people are complaining in the first place just automates bad service faster. It’s the same pattern playing out across every shiny new Copilot and AI integration today: faster answers don’t fix broken processes, they just break them faster.

The promise vs. the plumbing

On paper:

  • Buy a Copilot → instant productivity.
  • Deploy Agentforce → self-managing CRM.
  • Plug in Snowflake Cortex or Databricks Lakehouse → orchestrated data, AI everywhere.

In reality? It’s never just an API problem. As Steve Jones explains in Agentic Integration, the whole architecture needs an upgrade. Static, point-to-point APIs aren’t enough anymore. Agents need real-time, context-rich, secure flows of data; and that demands a modern integration fabric built for trust and governance by design.

🔗 2025: The integration pivot

This pivot is well underway:

  • Agentic Integration: Dynamic, context-aware data flows that flex alongside autonomous agents. Steve Jones nails this point.
  • Integration Trends: Low-code orchestration, embedded SaaS connectors, and event-driven pipelines. Prismatic’s 2025 report and Urvashi Patel’s trends go into this in more depth.
  • Governance stress test: It’s not just stitching apps together, it’s securing them, managing drift, and keeping the whole ecosystem audit-ready.

🧵 Your Modern Connectivity Platform: the backbone for real AI

So, what is a Modern Connectivity Platform?

👉 Think of it as the smart, real-time integration backbone that replaces the patchy mess of legacy connectors, overnight batch jobs and fragile point integrations. It’s your pipes, taps, smart meters, and security guard – all working together so your AI agents get the right data, at the right time, securely.

Best-of-breed versions today include MuleSoft, Workato, Boomi, SnapLogic, and newer SaaS-native players like Prismatic, or a tailored hybrid that blends these with your own API gateways and event streams.

A robust connectivity platform should:
1️⃣ Unify all your old and new APIs under a single, policy-driven layer
2️⃣ Orchestrate secure, real-time data flows for agents to act now, not tomorrow
3️⃣ Deliver security end-to-end: granular access, data masking, credential vaults, robust audit trails, and compliance baked in, not bolted on.

Building or modernising this isn’t trivial. But skipping it is riskier: surprise usage costs, chaos at scale, and fast erosion of trust.

(P.S. There’s also exciting early work on Model Context Protocols, open standards for how AI agents share reasoning and memory. A topic for another post, but worth watching.)

💰 Costs, savings, and the business case maths

One trap that still trips up boards: ROI numbers built on marketing slideware. Vendors love quoting time savings and efficiency, but the real maths depends on:

  • How clean your data and workflows actually are.
  • Whether you automate the full end-to-end process, not just the flashy front end.
  • How much hidden human effort you still need for supervision, prompt tuning, and governance.
  • How fast usage spikes can blow up your cloud spend if you don’t set caps.

👉 This is exactly where a trusted integration and AI strategy partner earns their stripes, testing the business case, clarifying true cost vs. benefit, and designing governance that sticks.

⚠️ What chaos looks like

Real scenarios I’ve seen:

  • A complaints agent issues double refunds because the ERP feeds it stale data.
  • A procurement bot auto-renews bad contracts because the policy lives in a dusty PDF no one digitised.
  • Finance discovers an unexpected six-figure usage bill because no one limited the Copilot’s token consumption.

A modern connectivity platform and smart integration design stop these, or at least flag them before they hit the CFO’s desk.

Back to basics: how smart leaders tackle it

🔑 Fix the root cause before automating the symptom
Better processes first. Then agents.

🔑 Accept “good enough” data + build trust layers
Perfect data is a myth. Design for drift, fallback paths, and human approvals.

🔑 Treat costs as variable
Budget for usage surges, supervision time, and periodic governance checks.

🔑 Build your Modern Connectivity Platform
Modern plumbing beats duct tape. This backbone keeps your agents honest.

🔑 Govern before you scale
Stand up an AI Council. Define safe vs. risky use cases. Rehearse your audit stories now, not when the regulator calls.

🔑 Don’t forget people and culture
AI tools don’t manage themselves. Humans have to trust, supervise, and adapt, or the system breaks down.

📌 Bottom line

Copilots, Agentforce, Snowflake Cortex – all brilliant. But they’re only half the story.
Your Modern Connectivity Platform and smart agentic integration do the quiet, underappreciated work that makes AI safe, efficient and genuinely transformative.

No trust layer? No trust.
No modern plumbing? High cost, low value.
No reality check on ROI? CFO shock and shallow wins.

Elaine Page and Alicia McKay got it right: the future of AI is a leadership challenge first – and a tech challenge second.

Where’s your organisation right now?
Modern connectivity backbone? Real agentic integration? ROI that adds up? Or hoping your Copilot alone covers the gaps?

👉 Let’s compare notes. And if you want a clear-eyed plan – that’s exactly where the right partner earns their stripes.
